Foreword by Social thinkers e. V. to the traveling exhibition Inclusion in view
This travelling exhibition thematically enters new territory in Germany.
Ten years after the ratification of the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities (UN-BRK), inclusive society is more a vision than reality. It is not just stumbling blocks but an invisible barrier in the minds of disabled and non-disabled people that separates them.
With its pictures and exhibits, the exhibition „inclusion in view“ aims to break down these barriers and to contribute to raising awareness in the sense of the UN BRK.
At the beginning of the sixties, one of the biggest drug scandals shook the Federal Republic of Germany: far beyond 2000 children were born with missing or malformed limbs. Responsible for this is the drug Contergan, which was recommended as harmless and safe especially for women during pregnancy.
From childhood on, the victims of Contergan have to get used to more or less stealthy and bashful looks. Half a century after the scandal, twelve people deliberately chose to expose their bodies to these looks. Director Niko von Glasow calls the protagonists of his film „NoBody’s Perfect“ “ the brave „.
He portrays people who have made their way despite their handicap and he invites to have a look, neither shy nor stealthy. His pictures give a clear view of life-affirming people, slim and corpulent, athletic and petite, introverted and extroverted. The aesthetic portraits reflect in a fascinating way the message of the film: the person is in the foreground and not the disability.
Niko von Glasow’s paintings tear down the invisible barrier between the viewers and the viewed. They create closeness. „NoBody’s Perfect“ – to whom doesn’t it apply?
„Art knows no disability“ – this thesis of Aktion Mensch is proven in the second part of the exhibition. At the centre of the artworks is the human being in the centre of society. Artists who experience barriers in their everyday reality have presented their view on the topic. The images reflect social restrictions.
The different artistic statements tell the viewer of an everyday life full of obstacles and the compulsion to overcome hurdles. The exhibition broadens the view to the topic of the environment and the vulnerability of „all“ through careless handling of nature and resources.
Our travelling exhibition is designed both in terms of content and design to clarify awareness in accordance with Article 8, accessibility in accordance with Article 9, as an educational mission in accordance with Article 24 and participation in cultural life as well as in recreation, leisure and sports in accordance with Article 30 of the UN BRK.
„Inclusion in View“ creates a framework of experience so that the legally defined cultural mission in the National Action Plan (NAP 2.0) can be used for EVERYONE. „Inclusion in View“ reinforces the need for the qualification of specialists in training and studies in the field of accessibility. So that art can be experienced by everyone.
It implements the target agreement that disability associations have contractually concluded with the German Museum Association, which was to be co-designed by the federal government in NAP 2.0 and the 16th federal states through their action plans, as a social mandate.

Image Description:
A person looks towards the viewer. The features of his face are confusing. Man or woman? Under a hat with a wide brim, three eyes look into the distance, while two of them are shady expressionless. Blonde strands are hiding the right side of the face. Full lips signal femininity. The mustache above prevents a clear assignment. In the background you can see bars and parts of a window. A small branch with green leaves seems to grow out of a beam. The picture shows a mixture of human characteristics that leaves room for interpretation.

BARRIERS IN THE MIND each step is an obstacle, each staircase a barrier. However, the greatest obstacle arises from self – imposed barriers in the mind. Ignorance and intolerance, mixed with vanity and self-assertion, form the bulwark of exclusion and injustice. Impressive speeches are often made and countless laws are drafted, but do data that serve the progress of people follow? Do pragmatism and the belief in lack of alternatives destroy the central concepts of solidarity, community and inclusion?
By building even more imposing lighthouses, politicians, administrators, cultural experts, planners, architects and entrepreneurs usually contribute to filling wallets and flattering egos. But is the idea of broad social participation really perceived or is it only treated as a inevitable evil? Does not external splendour increasingly overshadow the mandate of inner values? And what about the traditional ideals of enlightenment and Humanism? How free may and can a person really be in their prison palaces? Affected by barriers in the mind, they will never attain their freedom, because merciless steps and stairs not only obstruct the body, THEY ALSO BLOCK THE PERCEPTION AND THE THINKING.©

Photographs of the movie „NoBody’s Perfect“
The pictures in the exhibition are taken from the movie „NoBody’s Perfect“ by the director Niko von Glasow, who was injured by Contergan. The sleep aid and sedative Contergan was especially recommended to pregnant women in the Sixties. The consumption caused different damages to their children. In the movie, the generation of adults show their bodies.

Dark blonde hair surrounds a delicate face. With her toes she balances a glass filled with red wine. Against a dark background, an angel kneels to drink a toast to her.

Pure joie de vivre shows the image of a slender naked woman. She seems to be jubilant. The feet have lost the contact to the ground. Laughing outshines her face.
